Professional Profile

Dr. Syed Wajid H. Pirzada [a Pakistani national] is a research scholar, working with the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council [PARC] - an apex body in the National Agricultural Research System [NARS], as a Senior Scientist, in the area of World Trade Organization(WTO) Food & Agriculture Related Matters(WTO-FARM). He pioneered working on the WTO-FARM in Pakistan, and his interest centres on Globalization & Political Economy of Agriculture.

b. Academic:

A Vet. [Doctor of Veterinary Medicine] by basic qualification, Dr. Pirzada earned his postgraduate degree [Master of Philosophy] in basic medical sciences. He secured his postgraduate training inter alia in Strategic Planning from the DSE Germany, Intellectual Property Management from the Swift, Cornell USA and in the WTO-Food & Agriculture from World Trade Institute, Berne, Switzerland, IFPRI.He also undertook courses from UN/FAO and UN/ESCAP on trade/market analyses,on financial management from ICCO Netherlands and on field security from the UN.

c. Professional

In his capacity as WTO- Chief at Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture & Livestock [MINFAL] and as National Coordinator WTO-FARM, PARC he set a stage for change management, emphasizing reorientation and readjustment, in the wake of trade liberalization, to WTO regime. The reform process included inter alia changes in regulatory framework, quality infrastructure and human resource development. Dr. Pirzada is National Focal Point [NFP] on WTO-FARM, and National Enquiry Point [NEP] on WTO-Sanitary & Phyto-Sanitary [SPS] /Technical Barriers to Trade [TBT] Agreements. He is National Expert on Cartagena Protocol and Technical Expert/ Convention on Biodiversity [CBD] Secretariat. Dr. Pirzada is Member/Secretary National Consultative Group [NCG] on the WTO, MINFAL, and is Member National Committee [MINFAL] on SPS/TBT. He is also Member Working Group on Agriculture, Ministry of Commerce [MoC]. In these capacities he works closely with MoC and Pakistan's Mission in the WTO and the civil society in Pakistan/region.

He is also Adjunct Faculty/Resource Person on WTO, of Fatima Jinnah Women University(FJWU) Rawalpindi, Islamic International University Islamabad, National Institute of Public Administration [NIPA] Lahore, Pakistan Administrative Staff College Lahore/ Quetta ( National Management College), Planning Management Institute [PMI] Islamabad, Directorate General of Training, Customs & Accounts, Small & Medium Enterprises Development Agency [SMEDA], DFID Project Management Agency [PMA], IUCN, Export Promotion Bureau [EPB], Foreign Trade Institute of Pakistan [FTIP] &Federation of Chamber of Commerce & Industries [FCCI],Information Services AcademyIslamabad,Urban Security AND Rescue(USAR) Academy Karachi..

In these capacities he has conducted trainings on WTO across the Country, including inter alia at Chambers of Commerce & Industries Lahore, Karachi, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Gujrat and Gujranwala.

In addition students of National University of Science & Technology [NUST], Fatima Jinnah Women University [FJWU], University of Agriculture Faisalabad [UAF] and Quaid-I-Azam University [QAU] Islamabad working on WTO have been guided and co-supervised by Dr. Pirzada.

Dr. Pirzada is also working closely as partner/resource person with WTO Training Directorate Geneva, South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics & Environment [SAWTEE] Nepal, Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association [BELA], 3-D Associates Geneva and Consumer Unity Trust(CUTS)India.

Dr. Pirzada also works in partnership with civil society, and is a Member of Civil Society/human rights initiatives like WTO Watch Group, the Roots Pakistan- a grass root development action, and Voice Against Torture. Besides this, he is working in close cooperation with FRIENDS, Sustainable Development Policy Institute [SDPI], Action Aid Pakistan [AAP], Oxfam GB, SUNGI Development Foundation , Network for Consumers, Journalists for Democracy, Islamabad Policy Institute, the World Trade Review, UNDP-Human Development Program [UNDP-HDP], Pakistan.

He has been a regular resource person working for Small & Medium Development Authority(SMEDA),Pakistan Horticultural Development & Export Board(PHDEB),National productivity Organization(NPO),Intellectual Property Organization(IPO),Oxfam GB,Action Aid Pakistan, International Food Policy Research Institute(IFPRI),Pildat Pakistan and others.

He has been contributing towards national dailies like The dawn,The News,Observer and the frontier Posts.

Dr.Pirzada has more than 140 publications to his credits,presented his research work and has represented Pakistan on many national/international fora.
